the client

I was just now catching up on my favorite South African blog, when this darling picture reminded me of our core values initiative. I just want to remind everyone that we must never, not even for a moment, let our focus drift from the customer. The customer is everything. The customer is why we exist!

I'd like each of you to put this graphic on your desktop as an aide-mémoire with respect to this central focus and raison d'etre of our work here at Kat Herding. Let us make this image an intrinsic feature of our corporate Weltanschauung. And how could you resist? OMG, he's so cute!

Kat, I wonder if you could help me with something. I've noticed a lot of leaders in social media write in their blogs, "Hat tip to [so and so]" when -- I'm not sure when, I think it's instead of saying "Via" when acknowledging the pointer came from another blog originally.

What I'm so worried about is this: do you think I have to say "hat tip" if I want to be a cool kid "in this space," "going forward?"

What if it feels stupid to me to say it? Do I have to summon up my gumption and just do it anyway?

Hi, Amy. You raise an interesting point. And a thorny issue. "Thanx and a tip o' the hat" comes from a comic strip called "They'll Do It Every Time," which was drawn by Jimmy Hatlo starting way back in 1929. Therefore, it is quite an "old fashioned" figure of speech. However, it is now SO old, that almost no one remembers where it came from. It has thus become "retro" and is considered hip in some quarters. Personally, I would -- sometimes -- use it in lieu of "via," as the latter is rather pedestrian and conveys little sense of with-it-ness. Don't overdo it, though. Mixing hat tips and vias is generally a good practice to adopt. For variety, you might even consider tossing in the occasional "from."

I hope you will find this helpful.
